This is the first of my Learn the Lingo series, where I provide the must-know phrases when visiting a new place. What better place to start than Disneyland’s recreation of the planet Batuu, also known as Galaxy’s Edge. Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland is truly an immersive Star Wars-themed land for park-goers to experience the planet Batuu. From the sights of the Black Spire Outpost and the Millennium Falcon to the sounds of droids and stormtroopers interacting with visitors; you really feel like you have walked into a new world.
Once you enter, you are treated as a traveler visiting their planet. Most of the stores and food locations will be in Aurebesh writing, the written language in the Star Wars universe. You will rarely see merchandise with the Star Wars logo on it or have Star Wars movie references. At Galaxy’s Edge, you would mainly find souvenirs you would normally get if you were visiting another place, like a magnet with Batuu on it. If you are interested in getting Star Wars merchandise, you have to go to other parts of the park, like Tomorrowland.
Another fun detail is that the cast members are in character and speak to you in Batuuese phrases. Here is a list of words and phrases you may hear and use on your visit.
1) “Bright Suns” = Good Morning
2) “Rising Moons” = Good Afternoon or Good Evening
3) “May the Spires keep you” = formal goodbye
4) “Til the Spire” = casual goodbye
5) “Ignite the Spark” = Resistance greeting, “Light the Fire” = response to Resistance greeting
I have seen people say this greeting to Resistance characters who walk around and vice versa. It’s fun to see the camaraderie.
6) “On planet” = in Galaxy’s Edge
7) “Off world” = outside of Galaxy’s Edge
8) “Only the Ancients know” = I don’t know
9) “Travelers” = Visitors (AKA you),
Anyone who doesn’t live or work on Batuu
10) “Credentials” = identification/driver’s license
During payment or when ordering a drink at Oga’s Cantina, you may be asked to present your “credentials”.
11) “Credits” = Dollars (Currency)
Sometimes prices will not be listed on products, so cast members will inform you how much an item costs in credits.
12) “Cargo slip” = receipt
13) “Scrap metal” = Lightsaber parts
The timeframe you enter in Galaxy’s Edge is when the First Order is still a strong a danger to the galaxy and have invaded Batuu in search of members of the Resistance. In order to not raise suspicions, Lightsabers and parts are referred to as “scrap metal”. With an advanced reservation via the Disneyland app, visitors are able to build their own personal Lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop. To find this discreet location, you can ask a cast member where you can find some “scrap metal” or locate the blue flag with the Lightsaber symbol. (My post about building a Lightsaber – coming soon)
14) “Hydrator” = water fountain
A place to rehydrate and fill up your water bottle. BEWARE: you may spot a creature in the water tank. You may recognize it as the Dianoga from Star Wars IV when the gang got trapped in the trash compactor. It’s nothing to be worried about…I think? Drink up!
15) “Refresher” = restroom
The restrooms keep with the Batuu theme with the look and feel. I personally enjoy the music that is played in there. If you can’t hit up Oga’s Cantina for some tunes, you will definitely hear some good ones in the Refresher!
16) “Younglings” = children
Also known as Padawans if they are young Jedis in training. Strollers are referred to as youngling transports.
17) “Data pad” = smart phone
Your mobile devices will be referred to as a “data pad” because you are able to access the Datapad mini game in the Disney Play app. You can interact with parts of Batuu, translate Aurebesh signs, and play a variety of games and puzzles to support the Resistance or First Order. It’s a great way to help pass the time while you wait in line.
18) “Image scan” = photograph
Find a Disney PhotoPass Photographer to get your “image scan” taken in front of the iconic Millennium Falcon and the A-wing and X-wing.
BONUS One of my purchases in Galaxy’s Edge was a pack of postcards. In it included the Aurebesh alphabet. I wish I knew earlier because it would have been cool to decode messages throughout Galaxy’s Edge.
If you know of any words or phrases I’ve missed, please share in the comments. I would love to learn more.
Now that you have the basics, go show off what you learned. Enjoy your journey, traveler!
